Describe the effect on everyday life; a cataract assessment is about your needs as well as the appearance of the lens.
Changes you might notice
A cataract is clouding of the natural lens inside the eye. It can develop gradually, causing hazy vision, faded colours, glare, halos or difficulty seeing at night. These symptoms can also have other causes, so they do not confirm a cataract on their own.
Does a diagnosis mean immediate surgery?
Not always. Early on, a change in glasses or brighter reading light may help. Surgery removes the cloudy lens and replaces it with an artificial lens. Timing is discussed according to how vision affects everyday activities and the findings of your assessment.
Make the conversation practical
Before your visit, note the tasks that have become difficult: reading a newspaper, recognising faces or travelling after dark. Bring previous prescriptions and eye reports. Ask what is causing the change, whether glasses could help and what benefits and risks surgery would involve for you.
