A useful takeaway

Track the pattern, reduce obvious environmental irritation and arrange a consultation if symptoms persist.

What dry eye can feel like

Dry eye can occur when there are too few tears or the tear film does not work well. Symptoms can include scratchiness, burning, redness, light sensitivity and blurred vision. Similar symptoms can have other causes, so an examination matters.

Notice the environment

Air conditioning, wind and smoke can make dryness worse. Consider whether a vent blows directly towards your face and take breaks from prolonged screen use. These changes may help comfort, but they cannot identify the cause of persistent symptoms.

Discuss drops and other medicines

Artificial tears are commonly used for mild dry eye, while other treatments depend on the cause. Ask an eye care professional which product and schedule suit you. Tell the doctor about contact lenses, existing eye drops and other medicines; do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

What to bring to your visit

Make a short note of when symptoms occur, whether one or both eyes are affected and what you have already tried. Bring the bottles or names of any drops you use. This gives your consultation a clearer starting point.
