Why early changes can be missed
Glaucoma damages the optic nerve. Common forms often have no early symptoms; side vision may gradually be affected without an obvious change at first. A comprehensive eye examination helps detect problems that a reading chart alone cannot rule out.
Is an eye-pressure reading enough?
No single pressure number tells the entire story. Glaucoma can occur at pressures considered normal, and raised pressure does not always mean glaucoma. Assessment may include examination of the optic nerve and testing of the visual field.
Ask about your own risk
Tell your doctor if a close relative has glaucoma. Age and other individual factors affect the advice you receive. Ask how often you should return and which tests, if any, are appropriate. If glaucoma is diagnosed, early treatment can help protect remaining vision; it cannot restore vision already lost.
An urgent exception
Sudden intense eye pain with redness, blurred vision or nausea can occur with angle-closure glaucoma. Seek urgent medical attention immediately rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
