Do not wait for a change in vision to ask about a diabetes-related eye examination.
The retina can change quietly
Diabetic retinopathy affects blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. It may cause no symptoms at first. Later changes can include blurred vision or floating spots, which need assessment.
Ask about a dilated examination
The National Eye Institute recommends a comprehensive dilated eye examination at least annually for people with diabetes. Your clinician may advise a different schedule for your circumstances or existing findings. Dilating drops widen the pupil so the doctor can examine the back of the eye.
Eye care and diabetes care work together
Managing blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol with your treating clinician helps reduce the risk of vision loss. An eye examination complements that care. Feeling well or having no visual symptoms does not replace checking the retina.
Prepare for a useful conversation
Bring previous eye reports, your medicine list and recent diabetes records if available. Ask when your next examination should be, whether further tests are needed and how results should be shared with the doctor managing your diabetes. Contact the clinic in advance to ask about arrangements for your visit.
